THE TREATMENT:

The day of your appointment:
Please allow time before your appointment for filling out forms and for consulting with Dr. Lisa Kellett or Registered Nurse Diana Phillips if making your initial appointment.

Before the procedure:
You will be lying down during the treatment. No anesthesia is required, although the Doctor or Registered Nurse may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream.

The procedure:
The entire BOTOX® Cosmetic injection procedure takes approximately 10-20 minutes. Botox® is prepared as a liquid and injected using a tiny needle into the muscle that creates a wrinkle. Your doctor or Registered Nurse will determine where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles in your brow area. Patients may feel an initial minor ‘sting’ from the injection but afterwards there is usually no discomfort.
Patients are immediately able to resume their daily routine.



BOTOX COSMETIC INFORMATION:
BOTOX® Cosmetic works by reducing the contractions of the muscles that cause persistent frown lines that have developed over time. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines between the brows to form over time.

Botox® is a purified protein toxin produced by bacteria, used in extremely small amounts for cosmetic use. It does not spread throughout the body and there have been no reported side effects of botulism from its use. Botox® Cosmetic has been used safely for wrinkle therapy for over 6 years. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.

Botox® blocks the nerve impulse from reaching the affected muscle and the muscle then weakens. When this happens the skin overlying the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles in the skin gradually soften and often disappear. The effects of Botox® usually last three to five months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox® might last up to six or eight months.

Botox® Cosmetic is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada.

THE RESULTS:
You will see results within days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. Lines continue to improve for up to a month, and can last for up to 4 months. In clinical trials, one month following their treatment nearly 90% of men and women rate an improvement in their appearance as moderate to better. The onset of Botox is 3-10 days after treatment. Results may vary.

POST-CARE:
After Botox® treatment there will be some mild redness which lasts less than an hour. Rarely, there can be a slight headache or some minor bruising and swelling. Most patients return to regular activity immediately. However, sleeping or strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4 hours after injection. You should contract your frowning muscles 3 times every 10 minutes for the first hour after treatment. Do not rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours after treatment.

What exactly is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age. During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months.

How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?
Those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows form over time as the result of muscle activity. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles between your brows. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form.

Is treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic painful?
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting, your physician may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Many people are in and out of the physician’s office without downtime following BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment.

Who should not use BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be used in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.

Will I experience any side effects?
The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects. Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?
Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you "had work done." The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

What will happen to the frown lines between my brows if I choose not to continue treatments?
If you do not continue treatments, the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows will gradually look like they did before treatment.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic affordable?

BOTOX® Cosmetic has a long and well-established safety history. While you may only know BOTOX® Cosmetic as a wrinkle treatment, it has actually been in use for over 18 years for the effective treatment of a range of medical conditions and is one for the most widely researched medicines in the world.

It is reassuring to know that BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular physician-administered cosmetic treatment in North America with an estimated 15 million treatments performed since it was first approved. In addition, it has received a 97% satisfaction rating among users.

Myth #1: BOTOX® Cosmetic will result in the loss of facial expression.
FACT: BOTOX® Cosmetic is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced physician, you can still smile, frown and animate. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the line at the point of injection, so the other elements of facial expression remain active. It also has not effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

Myth #2: BOTOX® Cosmetic is botulism (food poisoning).
FACT: BOTOX® Cosmetic is not botulism. It is purified protein and a finished medical prescription product proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing.
